The story of Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath (1 Kings 17:7-16) offers us a profound lesson in faith, clarity, and commitment. Facing a severe drought, Elijah encountered a widow gathering sticks to prepare her final meal. When he asked her to first bake him bread, she hesitated. She had only enough flour and oil for one last meal for herself and her son. Elijah assured her that if she trusted and acted in faith, her supplies would not run out.
The widow had to make a decision: Would she act on the prophet’s promise and fully commit her last resources to a vision of provision she could not yet see? Her choice to trust and give what she had activated a miraculous flow of abundance. The jar of flour and jug of oil sustained her household until the drought ended.
This biblical account illustrates two vital principles for achieving our dreams.
Factor 1: Aligning with God’s Purpose: Understanding His Intentions for You
We can have any life we want. But the “Principle of Precision” states that to activate our dreams, we must be clear about the life we’re designing. It does us no good to metaphorically write a note to Life that says, “Dear Life, I want a good life. Please give me a happy life.”
Life does not know how to respond to a general statement any more than a builder knows how to construct a “good house” or a “happy house.”
If you asked a contractor to build you a really happy house, the contractor would look at you and say, “You’ve got to tell me what you mean by a happy house. You’ve got to describe it. You’ve got to give me a picture called a blueprint.”
Spirit is delighted to help you live the life you want. Step one is deciding what you really want and designing it with crystal clarity.
Factor 2: Signing Your Life Over to God’s Purpose
When building our dreams, we often approach Life with hesitation, much like the widow might have felt. We ask, “Will you please give me what I want?”
Life says, “Okay, I’ll give you your dream. But first, put your name on the check. Put your self—your whole self—into a Divine Alignment with what it is you say you want. Commit to your dream. Put your name to the dream, and the doors of creation will open.”
Many of us reply, “Whoa, whoa, whoa… Wait a minute! I don’t want to put my full self in. What if it doesn’t work out? I want to know how it’s all going to be okay. And I want to know where all the pieces are going to come from. How exactly how it’s going to happen. I want to have it, and then I’ll put my full self in. Then I’ll put my name on it.”
Every one of us has been given a sacred name. That name is “I am.” Our sacred name, what we lay on the altar of “I am”—whether it’s “I am limited” or “I am free,” whether it’s “I can” or “I can’t”—is shaped in the thinking chamber within us.
Every one of us lives in God’s divine Presence, Power, and Thinking Substance that shapes itself through our thinking. When we sign our name to the life we want—thus getting in harmony with our dream—we send a message of faith to the Spirit of God, at which point a strange and magnificent thing begins to happen.
When we allow ourselves to live in Holy Harmony, resources, people, and circumstances begin to show up in our life, fulfilling the dream we’ve designed. As sure as the widow’s flour and oil multiplied after her act of faith, the Universe will provide once you’ve put your name to your vision.
These Spiritual Laws, practices, and principles help us awaken to who we really are and what we are capable of. For some of us, it is far more than we have any idea.
